Languages Are Not Learned in a Day

One of the most common causes for people to give up learning a language is that they underestimated the amount of time they would need to master it. Unfortunately, learning a language well is a long process. Of course, if all you want to do is be able to say “hello”, “goodbye”, “thank you” and other such set phrases, then we’re not talking about a difficult and lengthy process. But, make no mistake about it, to be able to exchange ideas and arguments in a foreign language takes time.

So the very first tip I always give to soemone who is thinking of starting to learn a new language is not to underestimate the amount of time they’re going to need. If you’re in this situation now, realize that to grasp a language in a perfect manner, you need to spend a lot of time on it – and over a long period. You need to read different books written in your preferred language. Listening to music and conversation in that particular language will help you to get correct pronunciation and usage. Take foreign language help if you face any difficulty. You can also practice it by conversing it with people. As you can see, you need to set aside a good chunk of time every week.

Don’t Give Up Before You Start

But don’t think the purpose of this post is to put you off learning a language. Just the opposite – the aim is to get you into the right frame of mind. You must know the problems you are going to face before you begin so that they don’t put you off when you come up against them later. And as long as you know you’re going to need a long time, you’ll be able to get far enough so as to begin enjoying your mastery of the new language – and learning will stop becoming a chore and will turn into a pleasure. You’ll start wishing you had even more time to devote to it!
